What is your home town?
I’m a Hoosier…growing up in Fort Wayne.
How long have you been doing triathlons, running or swimming?
I was a pool rat growing up and swam competitively until about 16. In high school I was an exchange student to Germany where I was introduced to triathlons and cycling. My passion for running came about from a past job where I traveled extensively. Running was a great release while on the road. I’ve run 10 marathons and done two Ironman races: Louisville and Arizona.
What is your favorite piece of training equipment?
My Garmin 910XT watch. I’m a techie and love to review stats. This watch keeps everything.
What is your nickname?
Jaybird, Bird or Birdman. It started with my dad and has kept. I was nicknamed Woody in college at Arizona State University. It was the height of Cheers and being from Indiana with a slight resemblance to Woody Harrelson..it stuck. My wife can always tell if a friend is from college.
What is your favorite pre-race meal?
Oatmeal with bananas, coffee and if it is a long race, a peanut butter bagel.
What do you do to recover from a hard workout?
Rest and a fruit smoothie with a oatmeal. If I’m training for a Ironman and it has been one of those six to eight hour training days, then there is nothing better than a cold beer.
What is your favorite race?
Army Ten Miler. It’s a great run in the fall around the sights of DC with an incredible group of people. It is also humbling to see someone with a prosthetic leg pass you and think of everything they have gone through to be running…always an inspirational race.
